The Challenge

Before employees could access the company’s iProcurement system, they were required to attend a live, virtual instructor-led training (vILT) session. Two classes were offered weekly, each lasting an hour and led by a trainer who handled prep, delivery, and Q&A.

Why This Was a Problem

(hover or click on each block)

Time Lost

  • Employees had to rearrange schedules to attend fixed-time training.
  • Trainer time was repeatedly consumed by the same content.

Limited Practice

  • Only 1–2 employees actually got hands-on practice during sessions.

Ongoing Cost

  • Real productivity was lost each week due to the required attendance.

Our Approach

The organization partnered with techstructional to convert the virtual instructor-led training (vILT) into a fully interactive, self-paced e-learning course. Instead of simply repurposing slides, we sat in on the live session, collaborated with the trainer (subject matter expert), and redesigned the learning experience from the ground up.

What We Did

Analyze

  • Analyzed the existing live session.
1

Design

  • Redesigned the class into a realistic, hands-on simulation.
2

Develop

  • Scripted, storyboarded, and developed the e-learning.
  • Built the new design into an intuitive, easy-to-use interactive simulation.
3

Deliver

  • Ensured the final experience takes less than 30 minutes (typically 15–20).

The Results

Higher annual cost$23,494 saved yearly

Before conversion, employees collectively spent 1,152 hours per year attending the vILT sessions.

After conversion, the e-learning reduced this to less than 576 hours per year, saving the organization more than 576 hours annually.

Based on industry average wages, the shift to e-learning saves the organization about $23,494 per year, not including future savings from reduced trainer labor and class management time.

Why It Worked

The success of the conversion came from designing an experience that gave employees exactly what the live session couldn’t:

True Hands-On Practice

The e-learning simulation lets every person actually use the system, not just watch a video of someone else doing it.

Flexibility & Convenience

Employees can now complete the training whenever it fits their schedule.

Consistency

The same high-quality experience every time with no variation between instructors or sessions.

Immediate, Measurable Savings

Less time in training = more time doing real work.

What This Means for Your Organization

If you’re relying on virtual or live training to teach software, processes, or technical tasks, you may be spending far more than you need to.

A well-designed digital learning experience can:
  • Cut training time in half (or more)
  • Reduce the demand on your trainers
  • Improve employee confidence and performance
  • Provide measurable annual savings
  • Scale to thousands without extra cost
